It’s rare that I declare a pizza place “the best” in a particular locale. But I’ve spent a lot of time in Austin — and earlier this year, I took my 10th trip there over the past decade. That means I’ve eaten a lot of pizza there. From The Backspace and Via 313 to Bufalina and Pedroso’s. From Side Eye and Home Slice to… heck, I’ve ever driven out to Dripping Springs to get pies at Jester King. And my predominant feeling about pizza in Austin is that it is pretty good, but not great. That all changed the moment I took a bite of a slice from Allday Pizza, which recently opened a brick and mortar location, but also operates out of mobile facilities in a couple of spots throughout the city.
What’s Unique? Although Allday now has a permanent location in Austin’s Hyde Park neighborhood — about a 10 minute drive north of downtown – I stopped by their “semi-permanent” location in the backyard of Daydreamer, a cocktail bar on East 6th Street. They offer slices, full pies, and a sampler — if you buy five slices you get the sixth for free. This is a great option for two people and seemed to be a popular option for customers. But I was there alone and decided to only order three slices. The menu is pretty compact — there are four classic slices (cheese, pepperoni, cacio e pepe, and tomato) and four speciality “house” slices (stracciatella, pep and pepp, sweet sausage and spicy marg). There was also a special on the menu the night that I stopped by: pickle pizza.
What To Eat? I’ll get right to it. If the pickle pizza is on the menu when you visit Allday… get it! It features ricotta cream, mozzarella, sliced dill pickle, shaved garlic, lemon pepper panko, olive oil, and fresh dill. I’ve never had a slice like this before and it was incredible. And it comes with a side of ranch for dipping. Such a brilliant combination of flavors and I’m not even the biggest fan of pickles. I also ordered a cacio e pepe slice (solid) and a spicy marg slice, which is topped with stracciatella (great).
What To Know Before You Go? The flavors here evoke feelings of nostalgia and fun. Allday Pizza doesn’t take itself too seriously (how can you with pickle pizza that comes with a side of ranch?). Most slices are topped with some ingredients after they’re cooked, which strengthens the balance of flavors with the pre-oven base. They have a few other items on the menu (calzone, salad, soft serve), so you can definitely make a meal out of it. The two “semi-permanent” locations (as of publication) are located at drinking establishments, which is just good business. I hope that Allday continues to expand its footprint, but also its pizza offerings. I’m excited to see what fun topping combinations they come up with next.
