I’m a sucker for old school pizzerias. Bonus points if it’s a neon-lit roadside building. Before even tasting a pie at Pizza Town USA (95-111 Route 46 West) in New Jersey’s Elmwood Park, I was already in love with the ambiance.
What’s Unique? Pizza Town USA opened back in 1958, the year which is prominently displayed on its signage. Inside, it doesn’t look like all that much has changed since then. The place is bare bones — and that’s reflected in the prices, as well. It seems like the type of spot that would still be cash only, but you can pay with a credit card (and even order ahead online!).
What To Eat?
While Pizza Town USA offers a number of hot and cold subs (which a number of people were ordering while we were there), you’re here for the pizza. The menu is about as simple as it gets – pizza pies come in one size. They’re $16.42, which doesn’t include sales tax. You can add one of 13 toppings for an additional $2.82. There is a “PizzaTown Special” listed on the menu which contains sausage, mushrooms, peppers, meatball, and extra cheese. We opted for a regular cheese pie, which can easily be split between two people (at most pizzerias this would be considered the size of a “medium” pie). They also sell slices for $2.83. I love the random prices almost as much as loved the pizza. It’s a solid, classic cheese pie. Nothing fancy. Nothing fussy. Nothing gourmet. It’s not worth driving out of your way for. But if you live in the area, you’re lucky to have such a solid option for your local pizza cravings.
What To Know Before You Go?
The business was sold by the founders back in 2022. And although I didn’t visit prior to then, it doesn’t appear that much has changed. Seating is located inside in the form of picnic tables and benches. On nicer days you might find the sliding glass doors open. Be mindful of the quick merge you need to navigate in order to turn into the parking lot. Once you pull up, the toughest call you’ll have to make is whether to add any toppings to your order.
