Brooklyn’s Best New Pizza Place Is On A Brewery Rooftop

When Grimm Brewery opened in Williamsburg in 2018, the beer offerings certainly overshadowed the food (Middle Eastern bites from a nearby restaurant were originally available for purchase). But with the recent addition of a full rooftop restaurant — Lala’s (990 Metropolitan Avenue) — serving New Haven-inspired pizzas, the food at Grimm is now front and center. In fact, there might not be a better combo in Brooklyn than a Lala’s pie paired with a pour.

What’s Unique? New Haven style pizza is under represented in New York City. And Lala’s is a welcome addition to a pizza scene that offers just about every style imaginable. The pies are oval shaped and cut into approximately 10 small slices, making a single pie the ideal size to share between two people (if you’re really hungry, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to house one yourself). The best spot to indulge is on the open air roof deck during warmer weather. And with one of the best beer selections in the City, there’s reason to linger. Sides, salads, and desserts are also on available.

What To Eat? On a recent Friday evening, a friend and I split two of the ten pies on the menu. There is technically a “build your own section” with a red or white base and then a list of seasonal pies. We ordered one red pie (tomato sauce, garlic, oregano, pecorino, olive oil) and a fungi pie (shitake, maitake, thyme, mozzarella, gruyère) and added fermented red onions to each, which I highly recommend. Both pies were delicious but the mushroom/onion combination can’t be beat.

What To Know Before You Go? In addition to an open air roof deck, Lala’s also has an indoor area with overflow diners. Two pies will run you about $60 after tax and tip, so after a round or two of drinks your bill will likely be north of $100. The owners have spoken about how they aren’t trying to completely replicate New Haven style pizza. But rather they are loosely interpreting the style (i.e. they’ve created a sourdough based on the cultures from their sour beer which results in a thinner crust). So if you’re a traditionalist come with an open mind.

About I Dream Of Pizza

Some guys dream about winning the Powerball jackpot, making love to Kate Upton, or scoring the winning touchdown in the Super Bowl. But personally, I spend most of my time dreaming about digging my face into a mouth watering slice of pizza. Fireworks are ignited. Music comes out of nowhere. And just like that, I’ve fallen in love once again. Since 2008, I've chronicled my pizza eating adventures in New York City and around the world on I Dream Of Pizza -- the web's most popular blog dedicated entirely to pizza.
